Stockist of the Month | Wellcome Collection

We love Wellcome Collection, it’s known as ‘the free destination for the incurably curious’, and we certainly are a curious bunch. The museum is part of the Wellcome Trust, founded by Sir Henry Solomon Wellcome, a keen explorer and collector of curiosities. Henry Wellcome amassed a huge array of books, paintings and objects, focussing on the historical development of medicine. We were asked by Wellcome Collection to design some bespoke jewellery for their core collection and to sell alongside ‘The Institute of Sexology’ Exhibition (which runs until 20 Sept.. so get down their soon!) We designed gender pendants, for the ‘The Institute of Sexology’ Exhibition. The symbols denoting male ♂ and female ♀ originate from astrological symbols, symbolising the planets Mars and Venus. These symbols have been in use since the Renaissance! The pendants were hand made by Heber from the Zoe Project in Lima, Peru. Heber is paid a fair wage and offered flexible working hours so that he can work at the same time as studying and is able to fund his training to become an occupational therapist. (Video of Heber cutting out a pendant shape below)

For Wellcome Collection‘s core range we designed a tooth pendant, which has been carved from a single tagua nut from the Amazon Jungle by Darwin and his friends. Darwin selects a nut which is as close to the desired finished shape as possible, the nut is then formed using a variety of sanding processes and polished to achieve a smooth surface.

The gorgeous packaging for this product has been designed by illustrator Mike Topping! Check out his other amazing work here: despotica.com
