Amnesty International have teamed up with New Internationalist to offer a wonderful range of ethical goods online.
With over three million members worldwide, Amnesty International is the world’s largest grassroots human rights organisation. They investigate and expose abuses, educate and mobilise the public, and help transform societies to create a safer, more just world.
Founded in London in July 1961 by English labour lawyer Peter Benenson. According to his own account, he was travelling in the London Underground on 19 November 1960, when he read that two Portuguese students from Coimbra had been sentenced to seven years of imprisonment in Portugal for allegedly “having drunk a toast to liberty”.
His reaction was this… “Open your newspaper any day of the week and you will find a story from somewhere of someone being imprisoned, tortured or executed because his opinions or religion are unacceptable to his government […] The newspaper reader feels a sickening sense of impotence. Yet if these feelings of disgust could be united into common action, something effective could be done.” The rest is history, Amnesty went on to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for their “campaign against torture” in 1977, and continue to campaign for justice to this day.
New Internationalist is an independent not-for-profit co-operative publisher owned by a trust. Based in Oxford, the group originally only published the New Internationalist magazine, co-sponsored by Oxfam, Christian Aid and the Cadbury and Rowntree Trusts. Today however, they are entirely self-funded and produce a monthly global social justice magazine and books about world poverty and inequality. New Internationalist’s website is the first stop for global social and environmental justice.
