Just Trade are the exclusive importers of products made by the Zoe project in Peru. They guarantee a minimum order every month to ensure that the project is sustainable and the people have regular work.
Combining traditional Peruvian craft skills and materials with expert knowledge of contemporary jewellery, Just Trade has enabled the Zoe Project to produce unique, characterful pieces with strong appeal in the European market. From exquisite crocheted silverwork to delightful fruit & veg brooches, our distinctive ranges stand out, attract attention, and sell. Just Trade products are made with care and skill from locally-sourced, ethical materials.
The women who make our products live and work in the shanty towns of Peru. Just Trade offers them a rare opportunity to support their families without exploitation. In a place where long hours, poor conditions and punishingly low wages are the norm, we provide fairly-paid, secure work in a safe environment.
The income earned working with Just Trade transforms lives. The women who work for our projects have been able to improve their homes, pay for medical treatment and educate their children. And rather than traveling great distances for long shifts in a factory, they can work from home, which makes a huge difference to the care the are able to give their families.
Here’s what Neri, who makes our crocheted silver jewellery has to say: "When I worked in the factory, I would leave the house at 7am, not returning until 10pm, and my children were alone all day. Now that I have the workshop in my home, I can be here for them, as well as earning the money for their education." With the money Neri earns producing jewellery for Just Trade, she has also been able to pay off an outstanding debt, and save enough to buy a brand new prefabricated house, replacing the dilapidated plywood and cardboard structure she lived in before.
As important as a living wage is, we believe that work is about more than money. By empowering our workers to be creatively involved in the design and making of our products, and creating focal points for community engagement, our projects foster the dignity and self-worth that are too often often casualties of extreme poverty.
When Neri joined the Zoe Project in 2000, she was withdrawn and shy. Developing her talent for jewellery making and design, working for a fair wage and being fully involved in the creative process has boosted Neri's self esteem. "I love working with my hands and developing my own designs," she says. Neri now teaches other women new skills and leads the local workshop.
