Flowering Desert, is based in a rural community in Tamil Nadu, South India. They employ local people, predominantly women, in an area where there are limited means of earning a regular income.
UK based VIA Design worked in partnership with the ladies to establish Flowering Desert - giving textiles training to work towards skilled, secure support & employment. They make beautifully made textiles pieces for VIA to sell in the UK.
The training and employment opportunities at Flowering Desert offer a way for the women to increase their skills and future work possibilities, and brings them a status in their society, often for the first time.
VIA Design have noticed communities flourish as more women are equipped to make choices and improve the quality of life for themselves and the future generations.
Just Trade is now collaborating with VIA Design and Flowering Desert - offering the women a period of jewellery training to provide them with skills that will enable them to make beautiful jewellery, as well as textiles, this is now being sold in the UK and worldwide to give sustainable and fair employment to the women working at the project. The women are now able to train other women and Flowering Desert is expanding to employ more women.
The ladies are very grateful for the work that we are giving them as alternative employment opportunities for them are bleak and scarce. They would be doing hard manual labour working on a farm for very little money or wouldn't have the opportunity to work at all, therefore surviving on even less. At the project, they are paid a fair wage and work a shorter day – 6 and a half hours – so they have time to cook, clean and care for their families as well, which they are expected to do whether they have worked out in the fields in 40 degree heat or not.
It is through VIA Design that Just Trade has been able to diversify into developing a jewellery project in India.
