At the summit in 2000, the G8 nations promised to curb the arms trade and halve poverty worldwide by 2015, but so far they're not keeping their promises. According to the World Vision Chief Executive, “the billions of pounds spent on arms could be spent alleviating world poverty. Then we would not only have a more just world, but a more secure world.”
The “Blow the Whistle” campaign, run by Micah Challenge, is putting pressure on our Government and the international community to look at “the half-time scores” and to resolve to "turn the match around" so that extreme poverty and hunger really will be halved for the world’s poor by 2015.
Some progress has been made for example, with debt cancellation, but there is so much more that needs to be done especially on issues like
trade justice, climate change, HIV and Aids.
